MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL REPORT CARD National League EAST Philadelphia Phillies - The Phillies have been an offensive machine and have gotten solid pitching, especially out of the bullpen, which was suspect coming into the season. Second baseman Chase Utley leads the majors in home runs and is tops in the National League in RBI's. He could be the third straight Phillie to win the MVP. The team to Beat. Grade - B Florida Marlins - After a fast start, the Marlins have calmed down a bit. Still they are one of the surprise teams in the National League. They have a lot of power and a fine middle infield of Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla. Their young starting rotation will need to be more consistent. Grade - C Atlanta Braves - The loss of John Smoltz is devastating to the Braves. Their pitching staff has struggled and veteran Tom Glavine, who had never been on the 15-day disabled list has now been twice already this season. The offense can get hot, with Chipper Jones leading the way. They have the worst road record in baseball. Despite their impressive home record, they just have too many injuries to be a serious threat. Grade - C- New York Mets - One of the most disappointing teams in baseball. Front runners to win the East, the Mets have been bad from the start. The firing of manager Willie Randolph turned in a public relations mess and new manager Manuel may not be the answer. The pitching staff has been decent, but still too inconsistent. The offense hasn't gotten on track. They have been horrible away from home. There is no chemistry and no leader on this over rated team. Grade - D Washington Nationals - New ballpark is one of the few bright spots for the Nationals. They have been hit hard with injuries and are already playing for next year. OHIO STATE BUCKEYES - The Ohio State Buckeyes will look to return to the Championship Game for the third straight season. They'll have 19 starters returning that will remember the loss in last years championship to LSU. The offense features an outstanding ground attack, which will run behind one of the most impressive offensive lines in the nation. Chris "Beanie" Wells rushed for 1,609 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. The entire receiving group is back. Senior quarterback Todd Boeckman made too many mistakes last season and will have to limit those or he could take a back seat to super frosh Terrelle Pryor, the top overall recruit in the nation. Nine starters return to the defensive side, making them the top unit in the land. Defensive Player of the Year, Butkus and Nagurski Award winner James Laurinaitis leads the group, which has few if any weaknesses.
